Police mentioned they were contacted by a resident who found a car in Hanau marked with red-colored liquid

Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Automobiles, walls and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they stated in a official communication.

Law enforcement state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.

The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.

Law enforcement then discovered many other vandalized vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.

Police report initial examinations suggest the liquid was likely blood from a person.

"At present there remains no indication as to its source; officials are currently not cognizant of any injuries in relation with the incident," they added.

Municipal representatives said they were attempting "to solve the case" and have asked to the community for details.

A senior official said the attack rendered him stunned and required to be solved promptly.

"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he stated on online, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
